Angel Dust (working title)

A Movie Mogul, feature-length documentary

A woman dies every minute in pregnancy or childbirth...

Every minute of every hour, of every day, a woman dies from pregnancy related complications. Most of these women are in the developing world. This amounts to more than 520,000 deaths a year, most of which are easily preventable, often with a $1 dose of Magnesium Sulphate.

“Women are not dying because of diseases we cannot treat. They are dying because society decides that they are not worth treating.”
- Reproductive Health in Emergencies Conference, Kampala, Uganda, June ‘08

Enter neonatal nurse Angela Gorman, exhausted from a 12-hour shift in her local hospital in Cardiff, UK, where the maternal death rate of mothers is around 1 in 21,000. Angela was home to unwind in front of the TV when she happened upon the now life-changing Panorama documentary ‘Dead Mum’s Don’t Cry’. She absorbed the incomprehensible fact that 1 in 11 women were dying in Chad from pregnancy or childbirth, and that Chadian obstetrician Grace Kodindo was at her wits end, not knowing where to turn, or if she was even strong enough to go on in her chosen profession.

Angela contacted the programme producers and arranged a personal visit to meet Grace Kodindo. She set up a charity, raised funds, redirected provisions, and since that time not a single woman has died in Chad’s main maternal hospital from Eclampsia (the most common cause of death), and Grace Kodindo has found the strength that she needs to continue.

Directors Statement

Angela isn’t like the rest of us. She can’t process information like this, turn off the telly and wonder what to eat for tea. Not when she knows that this deeply unjust humanitarian issue can be semi-rectifiable with basic communication and education. To date, her work has saved at least 3,000 lives and has provided valuable training, hope and support to several hospitals in sub-Saharan Africa. The maternal death rate in Chad's maternal hospital has already dropped from 14% to 2.3% but there is still plenty more work to be done. Angela is now working with the United Nations Population Fund setting up similar schemes in Liberia and Sierra Leone.

ANGEL DUST is an observational documentary which will follow the trials and tribulations of Angela’s journey as she embarks upon the next chapters of life-saving social change in un-chartered regions.

Help us to make this film

Working alongside Angela’s charity ‘Hope For Grace Kodindo’, Movie Mogul Films aim to produce an insightful and inspirational film, which will raise awareness on an international scale.

Why donate?

The Panorama programme inspired 4 individuals to take matters into their own hands and do something about this tragic humanitarian issue. Film is a powerful medium and a theatrically released documentary might even inspire 40 people to do the same. This really is a worthwhile project, where you can make a real difference.

We are trying to raise the first £20,000 of the production budget through this site. The proposal is currently with the Sundance Documentary Film Institute, and will also be submited for match-funding with regional screen agencies, the UK Film Council, Brit Docs, Channel 4 and the National Lottery.

All funds raised will get the production rolling in Africa and the UK and as a contributor, you will be kept fully up to date with our progress (please sign-up first!). Donations of £25 and over will receive a pre-release DVD and your support will be acknowledged on the film’s credits. Donations over £100 will receive the same, plus exclusive VIP screening invitations.

Please note:
All filmmaker and contributor profits derived from the exploitation of this film will be directed back into the charity ‘Hope For Grace Kodindo’.
